Solutions for the new energy economy

New Energy Works Consulting is dedicated to helping businesses meet the current and future demand for clean energy.

We assist clients at critical phases of the energy resource development process, helping to bring to life new generation and storage projects through precise market analysis and resource planning services.

OUR SERVICES

  • Interconnection and Transmission Services

Getting project power connected to the grid is expensive, time consuming and, at times, frustratingly opaque. NEW Consulting offers winning strategies to connect your project to utility grids that would otherwise appear inscrutable. And we’ll support you the entire way, from application to contract to successful initial operation.

  • Power Sales Agreements

Profitable and robust power sales agreements need to be cognizant of the latest rules, as well as expected market operation and settlement costs. By focusing on the things that count, NEW Consulting provides essential input in the negotiation phase and can provide quantitative assessments of risk.

  • Resource Planning and Resource Adequacy

With the growth of renewable resources and new technologies, assuring the lights will stay on has only gotten more complex. NEW Consulting can help you track the supply-demand balance in major markets using analytical tools to assess resource adequacy.

  • Regional Wholesale Market Design and Operations

Trying to get your project’s output to market but can’t find your way due to the complexity of power markets and ever-changing rules? NEW Consulting understands both the theory of efficient market design and knowledge of settlement and business practices to bring you optimal results.

  • Energy Research, Strategy, and Analysis

Don’t settle for siloed analysis and partial solutions. NEW Consulting has a depth of experience and access to a wide range of analytical tools to solve your toughest energy problems.

PROJECTS

  • Navigating the Interconnection Process

NEW Consulting has helped numerous clients at every stage of the interconnection process, from assessing sites and submitting interconnection requests to reviewing study results. We thoroughly understand the rules and standards of many major U.S. utilities. This knowledge—along with our working relationships with utility staff—helps to provide the most favorable outcome for clients. In multiple situations, we have successfully challenged interconnection study outcomes and helped clients predict likely outcomes. We have also succeeded in lowering the cost of required upgrades by proposing and justifying less expensive mitigation solutions.

  • Negotiating Agreements

NEW Consulting has been instrumental in connecting over 3,000 MW of generation across North America. Knowing the "art of the possible" comes from our razor-sharp knowledge of utility tariffs and years of experience negotiating interconnection, shared facilities, and power purchase agreements. We save clients money by helping them avoid foreseeable problems and costly changes and ensuring that they have the necessary technical specifications for efficient project execution. Our time reviewing agreements usually pays for itself by minimizing the scope of any legal review.

  • Financial Modeling and Risk Assessment

NEW Consulting has modeled operations and projected financial outcomes for numerous energy projects, drawing on our deep understanding of power markets. We employ a range of modeling tools and data sources to frame expected values and assess risk. We are particularly adept at addressing and balancing uncertainty across physical variables (e.g., generation variability) and financial variables (e.g., prices), which materially affect value. Although there are no facts about the future, we strive to help clients focus on the variables that matter so that the projection is “approximately right” rather than “precisely wrong.”

ABOUT

Alan Comnes is the founder & owner of New Energy Works Consulting.

With three decades of experience, he brings his deep knowledge of electric power markets and energy resource development to solve tough problems in the energy industry.

Alan’s passion for energy analysis and the promotion of new energy technologies began when he developed his own degree at Stanford University (B.S. in Science, Technology, and Society), combining coursework in mechanical engineering, operations research, and economics. He carried that passion on into graduate school, where he earned an M.A. in Energy and Resources at the University of California, Berkeley.

He has worked in the industry in a wide range of capacities: in energy project development (at SunPower and NRG Energy), market analysis (at Energy GPS and MRW & Associates), power resource planning and market design (at Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory and Enron), and regulatory affairs (at the California Public Utilities Commission and Dynegy).

Alan understands energy development and analysis from many angles. And while he brings his full expertise to any engagement, his primary focus is his clients and their specific needs and schedule requirements. Through detailed analysis, dogged persistence, and thoughtful engagement, he will work to bring your project to successful completion.
